State Assessment

2020 Tests

The administration of statewide assessments - including CMAS, PSAT and SAT - for the 2019-20 school year were canceled due to the suspension of in-person learning in Colorado schools because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Colorado public school 12th graders would be able to take the SAT test on a school day in the fall of 2020 for no cost under an agreement the Colorado Department of Education is pursuing with the College Board, the organization that administers the test. Under this agreement, CDE expects it would be able to offer vouchers for interested students who are unable to take the SAT on the designated school day to participate in a national administration on a Saturday in the fall of 2020. Additionally, options for offering the PSAT tests that are normally taken by ninth and 10th graders are being investigated.

Student Resources

  • Computer-based testing student practice resources provide students with an opportunity to become familiar with the format and functionality of questions that appear on the CMAS assessments. Resources include technology-enhanced items (TEls) which allow students to indicate their responses to assessment questions in a format other than multiple-choice. The resources are not intended to cover all content or TEl types included on operational assessments. Sample items also provide students the opportunity to use the tools available in TestNav 8, the online testing software used in Colorado.
  • Paper-based testing student practice resources provide students with an opportunity to become familiar with the format of test items that appear in the paper-based test books.

CMAS Performance Levels, Cut Scores, and Test Design

Performance Level Descriptors (PLDs)

PLDs provide details about the specific grade-level content area concepts and skills typically demonstrated by students within a CMAS performance level. The met and exceeded expectations levels are considered on track to being college and career ready.

Performance Level Cut Scores

Students taking CMAS assessments receive an overall scale score. During the standard setting process, educators used scale scores to set cuts for each performance level based on the specific content that students should be able to engage with at each performance level.

Test Design

Information such as frameworks, high level blueprints, scoring rubrics, and evidence statements and standards that appear on the CMAS assessments.
