Salida Hosts CHSAA Large Group Music Festival

Salida High School and Salida Middle School Score High at the CHSAA Large Group Music Festival April 19, 2019.
CHSAA Large Group Music Fest
On Friday April 19, 2019 Salida High School hosted
a total of seven schools with over 200 students and teachers for the Colorado High School Activities Association Large Group Music Festival. Schools attending were:
Salida High School
Salida Middle School
McGinnis Middle School
Gunnison High School
Buena Vista High School
Mitchell High School
Boulder High School
The scoring system is  1-5. A 1 is the best you can earn, while 5 is the worst. There are two categories. The first is the prepared pieces of music which is performed for 3 different judges. The other part is sight reading. This challenging portion gives students the opportunity to demonstrate their ability to read music. They are given a piece of music they have never seen before and have to perform it for a judge. The important aspect of this is to show how literate the students are with reading music. Imagine if in English class the teacher would read aloud the novel they were reading and the class would just repeat it back. That would not be reading that would be repeating. This is why sight reading is important. We as music educators do not ask our students to regurgitate music, but read and understand it. SHS Concert Band scored 1's from all three judges and a 2 for our sight reading. SMS Concert Band scored all 2's and a 2 for sight reading.
The event started early Friday morning (7:30 am for SHS Music Director and host Andre Wilkins) and ended around 4:30 pm.
The judges were: Dr. Steve Siegel, Tom Allen, Gary Ambrosier, Bill Grimes and Bethany Brookens from CHSAA
Not only did the SHS Concert Band perform, but they also ran the festival. Several students from both the concert band and concert choir helped with the festival. Students directed schools where to go, help judges, introduce ensembles, set up the stage, maintain a judges hospitality room, but also set up and clean up the whole festival! Mr. Wilkins said, "I am very proud to be this schools music director. We were able to have a successful festival because we have awesome students who work hard, colleagues that support the performing arts, and administration that is supportive. I would like to thank the parents and students who helped out on Friday, you are the best!"
